About SGS OVERLORD
SGS Overlord is a cool standalone game that covers the epic WW2 battles in Normandy, starting from June 6th, 1944, until the end of August when the fighting winds down. You get to play through the whole Normandy operation, starting from D-Day, with turns that last 3 days each.
If you play as the Germans, your job is to hold the line as long as you can, because every week you hold out helps the Reich survive longer. As the Allies commander, you’ve got to use the American, Canadian, British, and French forces to first get a strong foothold, then break out of Normandy, push towards Paris, and maybe even win the war by Christmas.
Covers everything from June 6th to the end of August, with 30 turns (3 days each). Focuses on the tough fight in the Normandy bocage from June 30th to the end of August, lasting 22 turns. The Allies need to capture the deep-water port of Cherbourg before the Germans can defend it too well. This scenario lasts 4 weeks. Covers the American breakout from Normandy under Patton and Bradley, lasting 7 weeks. Depending on how well the game does and player feedback, more scenarios like the Battle of Caen or the Mortain/Falaise campaign might be added.
The game is played at the brigade or divisional level for land units, with smaller units like garrisons also included. Air units and naval support are available only for the Allies, and other elements like fortifications and supply units are included too. Both sides are balanced and fun to play once you understand their strengths and weaknesses. Detailed scenario info sheets are there to help you get into the game. One player controls the German forces, while the other commands a mix of American, British, Canadian, Polish, and French troops for the Allies.
The Germans have high quality troops and solid defensive positions but lack air support. They benefit from the defensive terrain in Normandy, like marshes, woods, and the infamous ‘Bocage Normand.’ At key moments, they can have local superiority and put the Allies in tough spots.
The Allies, with their huge air superiority, need to capture and hold key points early, unite their beachheads, and secure a supply port. Then, their reinforcements and numbers should help, unless the Germans use the tough terrain and bad weather to their advantage. Weather and supply are crucial. Bad weather can hamper air superiority, and supply issues mainly affect the Allies. This can make the campaign feel more like WW1 trench warfare than a fast-paced Blitzkrieg.
