SGS Spain at War is a full-on standalone strategy game that throws you right into the Spanish Civil War, covering everything from July 1936 to April 1939. It’s all about tactics, timing, and making tough calls over weekly turns that play out across the whole conflict.
You can play as either side—if you’re the Nationalists, your goal is to bring in the tough-as-nails Africa Corps and take control of major cities to crush the Republic. But if you’re repping the Republicans, it’s all about slowing down the enemy early on and slowly building up your forces into a legit army that can take on the experienced Nationalist troops.
Like, every unit that fought in the war is in here—Falangist and Carlist militias, all the units from the Africa Corps, Republican militias, Italian air squadrons with their actual historical names, full naval fleets, International Brigades, anarchist groups, Soviet tanks and planes, even German Bf109s from the Kondor Legion. It’s a history nerd’s dream, honestly.
You’ll need to manage your resources carefully—should you build new units, or use that industrial power to heal up ones that got beat up? You can’t just rebuild everything you lose, especially elite units like the Legion or big ships, so every choice matters.
The game was led by Miguel Santacruz, the guy behind España: 1936 and Battles for Spain, and the SGS team backed it up with a ton of research and historical data. It shows—they really nailed the vibe and depth of this moment in history.
